What is a Zcash Account?
In the Zcash ecosystem, the term "Account" has a very specific, cryptographic meaning. It is fundamentally different from an "Address." Understanding this distinction is key to mastering Zcash privacy and wallet architecture.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of what a Zcash Account is and how it functions.
1. The Seed Phrase (The Master Key)
Everything begins with a mnemonic seed phrase (typically 24 words). This seed phrase is the ultimate master key. However, the seed phrase itself is not an account. It is the cryptographic root from which an infinite number of independent accounts can be generated.
2. Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) Derivation
Zcash uses a standard called ZIP-32 (based on Bitcoin's BIP-32/BIP-44) to derive keys. "Hierarchical Deterministic" means that from your one master seed, the software uses complex math to branch out like a tree.
- The Trunk: The Seed Phrase.
- The Branches: The Accounts (Account 0, Account 1, Account 2...).
- The Leaves: The Addresses generated under each account.
3. Account vs. Address
- An Address (e.g., a Unified Address): A string you give to someone so they can pay you. You can generate thousands of addresses.
- An Account: A cryptographic boundary. An account holds a specific set of addresses. More importantly, it holds a specific set of spending keys and viewing keys.
4. Total Privacy Isolation
The most powerful feature of a Zcash Account is that accounts are mathematically unlinked to outside observers. If you generate Account 0 (for your personal finances) and Account 1 (for your business) from the exact same seed phrase, nobody on the blockchain—or anywhere else—can prove that those two accounts belong to the same person. They function as completely isolated identities.
5. The Full Viewing Key (FVK)
Because Zcash transactions are shielded (encrypted on the blockchain), you need a key to see your own balances. Every Account has its own unique Full Viewing Key (FVK). If you give your accountant the FVK for Account 1 (Business), they can see all the incoming and outgoing shielded transactions for your business. However, they cannot spend the funds, and they cannot see anything happening in Account 0 (Personal), even though both were generated from the same 24 words.
6. The Spending Key
Just like the FVK allows you to view funds, each Account has a unique Spending Key. This is what the wallet uses to mathematically sign a transaction and prove to the network that you have the right to move the ZEC out of that specific account.
7. Diversified Addresses
Within a single Account, you can generate multiple addresses (called "diversified addresses"). If you give Alice Address A and Bob Address B (both from Account 0), Alice and Bob cannot tell they are paying the same person. However, because both addresses belong to Account 0, your wallet only needs to use one Full Viewing Key to scan the blockchain and find the payments from both Alice and Bob.
