What is Zcash (ZEC)?
Zcash (ticker symbol: ZEC) is the native digital currency of the Zcash network. While the underlying protocol handles the complex cryptography of privacy and zero-knowledge proofs, ZEC is the actual asset being transferred and utilized to secure the network.
Here is a breakdown of what ZEC is and how it functions economically and technologically.
1. The Core Asset (Digital Cash)
At its simplest, ZEC is decentralized, digital cash. It operates on a peer-to-peer network without the need for a central bank or intermediary. Just as you hand someone a physical dollar bill without a bank verifying the transaction, you can send ZEC directly to anyone in the world securely and instantly.
2. Fixed Supply (The 21 Million Cap)
Zcash shares its core economic model with Bitcoin. There will only ever be a maximum of 21 million ZEC in existence. This hard cap makes ZEC a disinflationary asset. The rate at which new ZEC is created (the block reward) halves approximately every four years in an event known as "the halving," continually reducing the influx of new supply.
3. The Medium of Exchange
ZEC is primarily used as a medium of exchange. However, because Zcash offers shielded transactions, ZEC provides true financial privacy. When ZEC is transferred within the shielded pool, it functions like physical cash in the digital realm—the sender, receiver, and amount transferred remain completely confidential.
4. The Network Fuel (Fees)
ZEC is the lifeblood that keeps the Zcash network running. Every transaction on the network requires a small fee paid in ZEC. This fee serves two purposes:
- Spam Prevention: It imposes a cost on attackers who might try to flood the network with useless transactions (Denial of Service attacks).
- Miner Compensation: The fees are collected by the miners who dedicate computing power to process the transactions and secure the blockchain.
5. Proof of Work (Equihash)
New ZEC is introduced into circulation through a process called mining. Zcash uses a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus algorithm based on Equihash. Miners deploy specialized hardware to solve complex mathematical puzzles. The first miner to solve the puzzle gets to append the next block to the blockchain and is rewarded with newly minted ZEC (the block reward).
6. Fungibility Across Pools
ZEC can exist in different states depending on the address holding it:
- Transparent ZEC: Held in
t-addrs, fully visible on the blockchain. - Shielded ZEC: Held in
z-addrs(Sapling) oru-addrs(Orchard), where its balance is encrypted. Regardless of which "pool" the ZEC is currently residing in, 1 ZEC is always equal to 1 ZEC. The asset remains perfectly fungible, allowing users to move funds seamlessly between transparent and shielded states as needed.
