What Makes a Zcash L2 ZSA Unique?

Plenty of blockchains have assets. A Zcash L2 Shielded Asset combines things the others do not.

1. Private holders, public issuer

On a public chain, everyone can see who owns what. On Zcash, nobody can see who holds an L2 ZSA, not even its issuer once it has been sent on. What is public is the part you want public: which issuer created it, and how many exist.

You can prove an asset exists and who created it. Nobody can prove who has it now. That is Zcash working as designed.

2. It works today

No network upgrade, no bridge to another chain, no custodian holding anything for you. Assets have been issued, delivered and checked on Zcash mainnet using only what the network already offers.

3. Identity bound to the issuer

The asset id is computed from the collection's key and the item's description, including the image's SHA-256. Copying the picture or the memo does not make a genuine item: the copy fails the check.

4. Checked from the chain, not from a website

The collection's closure, its signed list and its registration are all written onto Zcash. The Zecboat Registry is the chain. Your wallet checks a collection directly, and with your own node it trusts nobody's word for the answer, including ours.

5. A trail that does not expose anyone

With Wake, a postcard proves it descends from its mint, and the proof travels with it to the next holder, without revealing any earlier holder. Wake is not yet externally reviewed, so the wallet shows its results in amber.

6. Compared

Who holds it is visible No No Yes
Available on mainnet today Yes No: needs a network upgrade Yes
Supply enforced by the network No: closed on chain and countable Yes Usually by a contract

7. Honest limits

  • Not for currencies or stablecoins: a split leaves one half without a trail.
  • Supply is closed on chain, not enforced by Zcash: visible, not impossible.
  • A transfer carrying a Wake proof is larger than a plain send and recognisable on chain as such, though nothing in it says which postcard.
  • Without your own node, your wallet relies on its provider's answers, and says so.

The short version

A Zcash L2 ZSA is private where other assets are public, honest about its issuer, checkable from the chain, and live today. If Zcash adds native assets, the carrier note can retire; the question it answers, which issuer is this, and should I believe them?, stays.
